Rightnowish w/ Migs & Rob

Both Bounce and Rob were featured on “Rightnowish” in late Summer/early Fall.

Rightnowish is a dope podcast by writer and journalist Pendarvis Harshaw and it is produced by a team of creatives over at KQED Arts including producer Marisol Medina Cadena, enginneer Jessica Placzek, and the team at KQED. Here’s a brief description:

“Rightnowish digs into life in the Bay Area right now… ish. Journalist Pendarvis Harshaw takes us to galleries painted on the sides of liquor stores in West Oakland. We'll dance in warehouses in the Bayview, make smoothies with kids in South Berkeley, and listen to classical music in a 1984 Cutlass Supreme in Richmond. Every week, Pen talks to movers and shakers about how the Bay Area shapes what they create, and how they shape the place we call home. “

Rob was the first up on the show this past August and spoke about the importance of literacy and working in the children’s book industry. Here’s one of the questions from the interview:

Pen: As of late, I’m seeing a lot of calls for activism. And some of that activism is surface level and some of it is deeply rooted in community. How do you use suss out a good book about activism for children?

Robert: I think the great place to draw the line for children is to show them not just beliefs, but action. Who are we bringing the fight to and why? And so I love when kids’ books can kind of throw that in there and and not hit you over the head with it. Again, we’re not trying to like make kids be professors when they’re children. It should be something they read and enjoy. But it should also challenge them and their parents.

Next up was Migs who is part of a four part series on tattoo artists in the bay called “Permanent Behavior”. In this episode he talks about his artistic influences, family history in Berkeley California, the crew, and tattooing.

Miguel: “ I’m doing tattoos, which is just like not like a political thing, but the thing that’s cool about tattoos, it’s always some transitional period in most people’s lives when they’re getting it. And it’s pretty cool to share that with them and even help guide them through it. “

Pen: “That’s so tight, bro, like thinking about life in those transitional periods and change is the only constant. But to get something to signify that you’ve gone through a transitional period is to say that ‘I want something to last forever from this doorway that I’m going through.’ And you’re more or less holding that door open or helping construct the doorway.”
